VANLIFE STARTMATE
The problem: a campervan's budget 240V inverter trips the moment a compressor fridge, blender or power tool demands its startup surge. The usual answers are all bad — buy a far bigger inverter, pay £500+ for a specialist 12V fridge, or crack open an appliance and hardwire a bare soft-start board into it.
The device: a plug-and-play inline soft-starter. The user plugs StartMate into the inverter and the appliance into StartMate — that's the whole installation. A microprocessor-controlled solid-state stage ramps voltage over roughly 1.5–2.5 seconds, cutting the appliance's initial inrush demand by a targeted ~60–70% and letting a small inverter cope with loads it could never start directly.
The business case: the van-life and off-grid market buys cheap household appliances precisely because they're cheaper than 12V kit — StartMate is the missing link that makes a £80 tabletop fridge work where only a £500 compressor unit did before. It fills the gap between "my inverter can't start this" and "spend hundreds replacing the inverter," as a professionally enclosed consumer product rather than a bare circuit board.
- Solid-state soft-start stage — ~60–70% inrush reduction target
- ~800W / 3.5A continuous rating, 230–240V AC @ 50Hz
- Tri-colour status indication — Ready / Assisting / Fault
- Fused moulded UK plug in, child-safe UK socket out
- ~15×8×5cm anodised aluminium shell with mounting tabs
DESIGN — OVERVIEW
A power-electronics product dressed as a consumer accessory — the entire UX is two plugs.
- Inline architecture — sits between inverter output and appliance input; no modification to either
- Controlled ramp — microprocessor-managed ~1.5–2.5s voltage ramp replaces the instantaneous inrush hit
- Status intelligence — tri-colour LED states: green ready/standby, blue actively assisting startup, red fault with safe output disconnect
- Protection stack — overload, over-temperature and fault detection with automatic shutdown
- Portable form — moveable between appliances and vans; mounting tabs for permanent fixing
Certification pathway (UKCA/CE, BS 1363, EMC, thermal and misuse testing) is part of the development scope — detailed requirements established with the manufacturing partner.
